Freshwater Gold Clam

Scientific name: Corbicula fluminea
This small clam was first found  in the Waikato River at Bob's Landing near Lake Karapiro in May 2023.
Surveillance to date has found it at locations on a stretch of the river from Lake Maraetai in the south (upriver from Lake Karapiro), downstream to Hamilton City.
They are often seen much smaller than 2-3cm, are yellow/brown with distinctive ridges on the shell.

Impact
These clams breed rapidly, clogging water infrastructure (e.g. hydro stations, irrigation schemes, municipal water plants) and could potentially outcompete native species.
